The challenge: interactive demo (2 min)

Luxury and fine crafts

Years to pass on a rare skill: the apprentice reviews it at the workpiece, in-house.

Leather goods, jewellery, crystal, cabinetmaking: your artisans pass on their skills while they work, in a few minutes; the learner finds them on the piece, guided in augmented reality. No phone on the bench, no video in the cloud: your know-how stays within your walls, 100% offline.

An experienced leather craftsman demonstrates a saddle stitch to a young apprentice; both are wearing augmented-reality glasses.
  • 100% offlineYour know-how stays within your walls: no connection, no video in the cloud, artificial intelligence included.
  • No data held by the software publisherWe don’t know what our customers do, and we don’t need to know. Emmanuel Bricard, co-founder.
  • Hands-freeThe technique is shown on the workpiece: the artisan keeps both hands on the piece.

Your challenges

Rare skills, slow to pass on, precious to protect.

Years of practice

It takes years of practice in a company to become a jeweller, a leather craftsman or a couturier.

Difficult recruitment

Decorative woodwork and furniture, leather and clothing trades: recruiting artisans remains difficult.

Transmission at the heart of the craft

Craft skills are passed on first from artisan to apprentice, in the workshop. The tool extends this transmission; it does not replace it.

A heritage to protect

Counterfeiting is costly for luxury houses. Your techniques and methods are a heritage.

Secrets to protect

What SHIFT89 changes

Workshop transmission extended, without the know-how leaving your walls.

What the experienced artisan, the learner and the person in charge of skills transmission experience.

  • 100% offline

No phone on the bench, no video in the cloud: your know-how stays within your walls, nothing held by the software publisher.

Use cases

From the cutting table to final inspection.

Bench work

Splitting, skiving, gluing: the preparation steps shown on the real piece, in the right order.

Machine and hand stitching

Flat or post-bed machine stitching, hand stitching: the experienced artisan’s technique, reviewed as often as needed before trying it.

Edge finishing

Edge painting, edge turning: the sequence of steps and the points to watch recalled on the piece.

Self-inspection and quality criteria

Quality criteria shown where they matter, checked by a quiz.

Jewellery and watchmaking

Setting, filing, polishing: workstation preparation, sequence of operations and inspection, shown at the bench.

Opening a workshop

Opening a workshop means training many artisans at once: your best people’s skills, passed on to everyone without tying them up each time.

The difference

What a phone, a video or an online platform impose on the workshop.

Every tool has its strengths. Here is what these approaches impose by nature, and what we do differently.

  • Other approachesA phone on the bench means one hand fewer for the task. Then filming, editing, and a video of your know-how to keep under control.
With SHIFT89The technique is captured with glasses or a headset on, and stays within your walls. No video in the cloud, nothing held by the software publisher.
  • Other approachesA video shows the technique somewhere else. The learner looks at the screen, then at the piece, then at the screen.
With SHIFT89Augmented reality places it on the workpiece. The learner moves at their own pace, guided step by step.
  • Other approachesAn online platform keeps your methods on its servers.By design: a connection, an account, data held by the software publisher.
With SHIFT89Your methods stay with you.No network to open, no online account, nothing held by us.

What we equip

Your tasks, your vocabulary.

The tutorial trains the technique; it awards no professional title or diploma, and does not replace the eye of the artisan who passes it on.

Our hardware advice

The right hardware for your workshop, not the latest fashion.

As former industry professionals, we advise you as we would have advised ourselves: the device suited to your workshop, your protective equipment and your budget. Only solutions proven in real conditions.

At the bench

A device that leaves a clear view of the piece: depending on use, lighter and more affordable glasses may be suitable.

Very high-precision techniques

For tasks performed under magnification, the tutorial supports preparation and inspection, not the technique itself.

Your budget

Just the hardware you need for your workstations and teams: neither the latest fad nor a cheaper but unreliable solution.

Turnkey: we configure each device and fit it with the necessary accessories, so that it works in your environment and with your constraints. What we prepare

Works on: Microsoft HoloLens 2, Arvicom CART-S, Samsung Galaxy XR, VITURE Luma Ultra XR, XREAL Aura and VIVE Eagle, and soon Arvicom CART-3D. Your content does not depend on a device.

Measured results

What our deployments have measured.

Figures measured during our deployments, a method validated by 5 industrial PhD theses and evaluated against Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides in a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022.

  • 1 minTo create an instructionBy the expert, on the real equipment, with no writing or editing (measured in our deployments)
  • × 2Train twice as fast, autonomouslyMeasured in our deployments, at a tier-one automotive supplier
  • ÷ 5Trainers and mentors tied up5 times fewer, measured in our deployments

Industrial research

A boiler manufacturing plant: the method evaluated against Guides

Our method stems from work carried out with Institut Mines-Télécom in a boiler manufacturing plant. It was compared with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

Result: a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022, the leading international conference on augmented reality.

Deployment

8 trainers operational after one day

In our deployments, one day of training is enough: trainers create their first tutorial that same afternoon, then work on their own from the next day.

Result: 8 trainers operational at D+1.

Funding and procurement

Simple purchasing.

An off-the-shelf solution, on quotation. It is up to the buyer to qualify their purchase, according to the rules that apply to them.

Licences on quotation

One licence per device, glasses or headset, with volume discounts, and one licence for the PC application. Your choice: annual licences, multi-year licences or licences for the lifetime of the hardware. A quotation based on your project.

One day to get started

A one-hour scoping session by video call, one day on site with up to 8 of your experts, then standard project management. Additional support days when your project requires them.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions.

Our know-how is our heritage. What does SHIFT89 see?

Nothing. Everything runs offline, on your devices and workstations: SHIFT89 hosts none of your data and the software requires no online account. The artificial intelligence (transcription, translation, voice) also runs on your computer.

Can augmented reality pass on such a delicate technique?

It does not replace the artisan who passes it on: it shows the technique on the workpiece, to review as often as needed, and lets the experienced artisan focus on what only they can correct. For tasks performed under magnification, it supports preparation and inspection.

Our teams are far from digital. Is this for us?

Yes. The tool requires no IT skills: a one-hour scoping video call, one day on site with your trainers, then standard project management. The further you are from digital, the more you stand to gain.

Does the tutorial prepare for a professional title or a diploma?

It trains the technique, on the real piece. It awards neither the title nor the diploma, and does not replace assessment.

Our artisans have no time. How much time does it take?

One minute per instruction, a few minutes for a tutorial, on the real equipment, while doing the task. No writing, no filming, no mandatory editing, no contractor.

HoloLens 2 is no longer manufactured, and its security updates continue until December 2027 for connected devices. What happens to the investment?

At SHIFT89, we support HoloLens 2 until at least the end of 2030, so you can use your investment for longer. #AugmentedTraining needs no connection to work: your HoloLens 2 headsets can therefore be disconnected from Wi-Fi, for maximum security.

Your content does not depend on one device: several augmented-reality glasses and headsets are compatible. We advise you, completely independently, on the one that suits your working conditions and your budget.

All content created with #AugmentedTraining on HoloLens 2 can be reused, without being redone, on the new glasses and headsets we support.

Your know-how deserves to stay within your walls.
