The challenge: interactive demo (2 min)

Hospitals and healthcare

Skills walking out the door, a growing cyber threat: the know-how stays, without a network.

Preventive maintenance, quality control, tray assembly, care unit equipment: your most experienced technicians, staff and clinicians pass on their skills in a few minutes; every newcomer finds them on the real equipment, guided in augmented reality. No data leaves the facility.

A biomedical technician wearing augmented-reality glasses checks a medical device in a hospital’s biomedical workshop.
  • 100% offlineNothing to connect to the facility’s network: creating, learning and tracking work offline.
  • No data held by the software publisherNo data leaves the facility: nothing held by the software publisher, no online account.
  • Hands-freeThe instruction is displayed on the equipment or the tray: both hands stay on the job.

Your challenges

Obligations, skills walking out the door, a growing cyber threat.

A maintenance obligation

The maintenance and quality control of medical devices are regulated: every procedure must be done as planned.

Skills walking out the door

Growing reliance on external contractors erodes in-house skills.

A growing cyber threat

Cybersecurity incidents are on the rise in healthcare organisations.

100% offline

Training becoming more structured

Staff transferred from other departments, tray assembly by a dedicated team: on-the-job training is becoming more structured.

What SHIFT89 changes

The department’s know-how passed on on site, without connecting anything to the network.

What the biomedical technician, the sterilisation technician and their supervisors experience.

  • Nothing to connect to the network

No connection, no online account, no data leaving the facility: nothing to connect to the facility’s information system, nothing held by the software publisher.

    Learn more
  • Hands-free

The procedure is displayed on the equipment; in sterilisation, the instruction appears on the tray while the hands assemble it.

    Learn more
  • A few minutes

Your experienced technicians and staff capture their know-how on site, one minute per instruction.

Use cases

From the biomedical department to sterilisation, and on to the care units.

Preventive maintenance

The procedure shown on the equipment, step by step, for the technician alone in front of the device.

Quality control

The quality control steps recalled when they are carried out, on the real equipment.

Tray assembly

Each tray assembled the way your most experienced technician does it, guided in augmented reality.

Forward flow

New staff learn the forward-flow principle on the real equipment, from the dirty zone to the clean zone.

Autoclave and tests

Bowie-Dick test, vacuum leak test, process indicators: the checks shown at the workstation, verified by a quiz.

Onboarding newcomers

Staff transferred from other departments, newly recruited technicians: autonomous faster, without tying up a mentor for every arrival.

Care unit equipment

Operating theatre, intensive care, emergency department: setting up a rarely used piece of equipment, reviewed beside the device before it is needed.

Emergency medical services

Vehicles and emergency equipment: the task done with confidence, even on equipment that is rarely used.

The difference

What an online platform, a tablet or a video impose on the hospital.

Every tool has its strengths. Here is what these approaches impose by nature, and what we do differently.

  • Other approachesAn online platform requires network access from the facility. An account to create, a data flow to open, data held by a software publisher.
With SHIFT89Nothing to connect to the facility’s network. No online account, no data leaving the facility.
  • Other approachesA tablet next to the device means eyes leaving the equipment. You read, turn around, look for where to act.
With SHIFT89The instruction is displayed on the equipment, right where action is needed.Eyes on the task, both hands on the tool.
  • Other approachesA video shows the task somewhere else. You have to pause, go back, find the right moment.
With SHIFT89Augmented reality places it on the equipment. The learner moves at their own pace, guided step by step.

What we equip

Your trades, in your words.

The tutorial shows the procedure; your procedures, good practice guidelines and manufacturers’ documents remain the reference.

Maintenance obligation
A procedure passed on and tracked, which stays in the department when the technician leaves.
Preventive maintenance and quality control
The steps shown on the equipment, when they are carried out.
CMMS
Your CMMS says what to do and when; the tutorial shows how to do it.
Workstation authorisation
The tutorial trains and tells you who has completed what; authorisation is still granted according to your rules.
Pre-disinfection, washing, washer-disinfector
The washing area steps, in order, at the workstation.
Assembly, packaging, wrapping
Each tray the way your most experienced technician does it.
Autoclave, Bowie-Dick test, process indicators
The checks shown and verified by a quiz.
Sterilisation technician
The procedure practised on the real equipment; the tutorial awards no qualification.

Our hardware advice

The right equipment for your use, not the latest fad.

As former industry professionals, we advise you as we would have advised ourselves: the device suited to your constraints, your uses and your budget. Only operational solutions, proven in real conditions.

Hygiene and attire

Dedicated attire, forward flow, clean zone: the device fits into your hygiene rules, not the other way round. Its use in the packaging area is assessed with your sterilisation manager, case by case.

The facility’s network

Devices that work without any connection: your IT department has no data flow to open.

A tight budget

A start sized to your budget, with just the equipment you need, proven in real conditions.

Turnkey: we configure each device and fit it with the necessary accessories, so that it works in your environment and with your constraints. What we prepare

Works on: Microsoft HoloLens 2, Arvicom CART-S, Samsung Galaxy XR, VITURE Luma Ultra XR, XREAL Aura and VIVE Eagle, and soon Arvicom CART-3D. Your content does not depend on a device.

Measured results

What our deployments have measured.

Figures measured during our deployments, a method validated by 5 industrial PhD theses and evaluated against Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides in a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022.

  • 1 minTo create an instructionBy the expert, on the real equipment, with no writing or editing (measured in our deployments)
  • × 2Train twice as fast, autonomouslyMeasured in our deployments, at a tier-one automotive supplier
  • ÷ 5Trainers and mentors tied up5 times fewer, measured in our deployments

Deployment

8 trainers operational after one day

In our deployments, one day of training is enough: trainers create their first tutorial that same afternoon, then work on their own from the next day.

Result: 8 trainers operational at D+1.

Industrial research

A boiler manufacturing plant: the method evaluated against Guides

Our method stems from work carried out with Institut Mines-Télécom in a boiler manufacturing plant. It was compared with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

Result: a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022, the leading international conference on augmented reality.

Funding and procurement

Simple purchasing.

An off-the-shelf solution, on quotation. It is up to the buyer to qualify their purchase, according to the rules that apply to them.

Licences on quotation

One licence per device, glasses or headset, with volume discounts, and one licence for the PC application. Your choice: annual licences, multi-year licences or licences for the lifetime of the hardware. A quotation based on your project.

One day to get started

A one-hour scoping session by video call, one day on site with up to 8 of your experts, then standard project management. Additional support days when your project requires them.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions.

Do the devices need to be connected to the facility’s network?

No. No connection is required, whether to create, to learn or to track learners. No data leaves the facility.

Does the tutorial replace our written procedures?

No. Manufacturers’ procedures and your protocols remain the reference. The tutorial complements them: it shows the procedure on the equipment, right where action is needed, and can be adjusted in a few minutes whenever something changes.

It also makes training far more engaging and effective, particularly for younger generations. And it enables independent training, where there is no safety risk for learners.

Finally, it becomes your training standard: all learners are trained the same way, and this standard improves continuously, incorporating the best of your past, present and future trainers.

Can the glasses be used in the clean zone?

Your hygiene rules apply: using a device in the packaging area is assessed with your sterilisation manager, case by case. You can start with the washing area, training for new staff and the biomedical department.

Does the tutorial count as authorisation?

No. It trains the procedure and tells you who has completed what; workstation authorisation is still granted according to your rules.

We manufacture medical devices. Can you train our hospital customers?

Yes. A tutorial created on your equipment serves all your customers, without any connection to your servers or to theirs. See the Equipment manufacturers page.

HoloLens 2 is no longer manufactured, and its security updates continue until December 2027 for connected devices. What happens to the investment?

At SHIFT89, we support HoloLens 2 until at least the end of 2030, so you can use your investment for longer. #AugmentedTraining needs no connection to work: your HoloLens 2 headsets can therefore be disconnected from Wi-Fi, for maximum security.

Your content does not depend on one device: several augmented-reality glasses and headsets are compatible. We advise you, completely independently, on the one that suits your working conditions and your budget.

All content created with #AugmentedTraining on HoloLens 2 can be reused, without being redone, on the new glasses and headsets we support.
