The challenge: interactive demo (2 min)

Rail industry

Between two overhauls, the procedure is forgotten. Keep it ready, on the rolling stock.

Inspections, overhauls, mid-life operations: your experts pass on their skills in a few minutes, on the rolling stock; your new maintenance technicians follow them in augmented reality, hands-free, in the pit as on the bogie. No network to open in the workshop: your know-how never leaves the site.

A technician wearing augmented-reality glasses inspects a train bogie from the inspection pit of a workshop.
  • 100% offlineNo network to open at the maintenance depot, no online account: your site’s know-how never leaves it, artificial intelligence included.
  • Hands-free, on the real equipmentIn the pit, under the train, with your PPE: the instruction is displayed on the equipment, both hands stay free for the tool.
  • A few minutesOne minute per instruction: the expert’s skill passed on during the inspection, not afterwards.

Your challenges

Rolling stock that has to run, know-how that has to stay.

Technicians to recruit

General and mechanical maintenance workers are hard to recruit, across all sectors.

Rolling stock out of service

In heavy maintenance, the vehicle is withdrawn from service: every hesitation over a task is paid for in availability.

Rare tasks

Overhaul, life extension, modernisation: heavy maintenance comes round at long intervals. Between two occasions, the procedure is forgotten.

Safe energy isolation, lock-off and authorisation

Work under electrical authorisation, lockout: the right procedure, in the right order.

Errors and safety

New rolling stock

New rolling stock, new technologies, new workshops: so many teams to train, often far from their experts.

Know-how to keep

The know-how of your most experienced technicians is your advantage: it has no business being on a software publisher’s servers.

Secrets to protect

What SHIFT89 changes

Your experts’ skills, ready when the rolling stock enters the workshop.

  • 100% offline

At the maintenance depot as in the component workshop: no network to open, no data held by the software publisher. Your site’s know-how never leaves it.

  • Hands-free

In the pit, on the bogie, on board the train: the instruction is displayed on the rolling stock, both hands stay free for the tool.

  • A few minutes

Your experts pass on their skills during the inspection: one minute per instruction, with no writing or editing.

  • In everyone’s language

In the PC application, each instruction is translated and read aloud in the technician’s language, by an AI that runs at your site; a quiz checks what has been learnt.

Use cases

From inspection to overhaul.

Inspections and routine maintenance

Day-to-day routine maintenance: every technician follows the inspection on the rolling stock, at the workshop’s pace.

Overhaul and heavy maintenance

The expert’s rare procedure, available when the rolling stock arrives for overhaul, for the whole team.

Repairable parts

In the component workshop, the refurbishment procedure for your repairable parts, passed on before those who know it leave.

Lockout

Making safe in the right order, before intervening. The tutorial prepares and rehearses; it does not replace authorisation.

Take the challenge (2 min)

Mid-life operations

A job that comes round only once in the life of a train: the procedure passed on for the first one serves for all the others.

Newcomers and apprentices

Autonomous faster on the real rolling stock, without tying up a mentor for each new arrival.

A fair comparison

What tablets, the cloud and manuals impose in the workshop.

They are useful tools. Under rolling stock, however, they impose a few constraints, by their very nature.

  • Other approachesA tablet in the pit.One hand fewer for the tool, under the train, with your PPE.
With SHIFT89Both hands free for the tool. The instruction is displayed on the rolling stock.
  • Other approachesAn online platform at the maintenance depot.A network to open in the workshop, data held by a software publisher.
With SHIFT89Nothing to open, nothing leaves.Offline, from authoring to learner tracking.
  • Other approachesOne more manual, read at the office.Far from the rolling stock, at a time when it is not needed.
With SHIFT89The procedure shown on the rolling stock. At the time of the intervention, where it takes place.

What we equip

Your workshops’ vocabulary.

The tutorial supports the task: your maintenance documents, electrical authorisation and the requirements for safety-critical tasks remain the reference.

Rolling stock and maintenance depots
Tutorials created on your rolling stock, in your workshop, and which stay there.
Inspection and overhaul
The expected procedure, in the right place, in the right order.
Repairable parts
Refurbishment know-how, passed on before people leave.
Mid-life operations
A rare job, prepared on the real rolling stock.
Electrical authorisation and lockout
The tutorial prepares for and rehearses the procedure; it does not replace the authorisation, which is issued by the employer.
Heavy maintenance
Rolling stock out of service for as short a time as possible: the procedure is ready when it arrives.

Our hardware advice

The right hardware for your workshop, not the latest fashion.

As former industry professionals, we advise you as we would have advised ourselves: the device suited to your workshops, your PPE and your budget. Only solutions proven in real conditions.

The workshop is our home ground

Maintenance depots, maintenance and component workshops: that is where glasses and headsets give their best. Outdoor work and cold conditions require a case-by-case study.

PPE and the pit

A device that can be worn with your protective equipment, in the pit as on board the train, not just in a demo room.

No network to open

The recommended device works offline, like the rest of the solution.

Budget and number of workstations

The right number of devices, of the right model, for your workshops and teams, without oversizing.

Turnkey: we configure each device and fit it with the necessary accessories, so that it works in your environment and with your constraints. What we prepare

Works on: Microsoft HoloLens 2, Arvicom CART-S, Samsung Galaxy XR, VITURE Luma Ultra XR, XREAL Aura and VIVE Eagle, and soon Arvicom CART-3D. Your content does not depend on a device.

Measured results

What our deployments have measured.

Figures measured during our deployments. Our method has been evaluated against Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

  • × 2Train twice as fast, autonomouslyMeasured in our deployments, at a tier-one automotive supplier
  • ÷ 5Trainers and mentors tied up5 times fewer, measured in our deployments
  • 1 minTo create an instructionBy the expert, on the real equipment, with no writing or editing (measured in our deployments)

Industrial research

A boiler manufacturing plant: the method evaluated against Guides

Our method stems from work carried out with Institut Mines-Télécom in a boiler manufacturing plant. It was compared with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

Result: a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022, the leading international conference on augmented reality.

Deployment

8 trainers operational after one day

In our deployments, one day of training is enough: trainers create their first tutorial that same afternoon, then work on their own from the next day.

Result: 8 trainers operational at D+1.

Funding and procurement

Simple purchasing.

An off-the-shelf solution, on quotation. It is up to the buyer to qualify their purchase, according to the rules that apply to them.

Licences on quotation

One licence per device, glasses or headset, with volume discounts, and one licence for the PC application. Your choice: annual licences, multi-year licences or licences for the lifetime of the hardware. A quotation based on your project.

One day to get started

A one-hour scoping session by video call, one day on site with up to 8 of your experts, then standard project management. Additional support days when your project requires them.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions.

Does it work at the maintenance depot, with no network?

Yes. No connection is required, whether to create, to learn or to track learners. Nothing is hosted by SHIFT89.

What about infrastructure trades?

Our home ground is the workshop: maintenance depots, maintenance and component workshops. For infrastructure, we can help prepare and practise tasks in a training room or on training equipment; work outdoors requires a case-by-case study.

Does the tutorial replace our maintenance documents or authorisation?

No. Your maintenance documents and the authorisation remain the reference. The tutorial shows the procedure on the rolling stock, at the moment it is carried out.

Our maintenance standards change. Do we have to redo everything?

No. An instruction can be updated in a few minutes, by your expert.

Our experts are rare and in great demand. How long does it take?

One minute per instruction, a few minutes for a tutorial, during the inspection. No writing, no filming, no mandatory editing.
