The challenge: interactive demo (2 min)

Navy

The specialist leaves the ship. Their know-how stays on board.

The sailor follows the procedure in augmented reality, on the ship’s equipment, both hands free. Nothing to connect, alongside or at sea, and no data passes to the software publisher. The crew changes, the know-how stays on board.

A technician, wearing augmented-reality glasses, operates a valve in a ship’s engine room.
  • 100% offlineAlongside or at sea, on operations: nothing to connect, nothing to open, artificial intelligence included.
  • No data held by the software publisherWe don’t know what our customers do, and we don’t need to know. Emmanuel Bricard, co-founder.
  • Hands-freeOne hand for yourself, one hand for the ship: the instruction is displayed on the equipment, there is nothing to hold.

Your challenges

A crew that changes, skills that must stay.

Crews that change

Postings and new assignments: know-how must stay on board when the sailor leaves the ship.

When teams rotate

At sea, no network

Little or no network, and strict confidentiality: training cannot depend on a connection.

100% offline

Infrequent maintenance tasks

Rarely used equipment, an infrequent intervention: at sea, the expert is not always on board.

Long training courses

Long technical training courses, and tasks to rehearse on the real equipment.

What SHIFT89 changes

What the old hand knows, the young sailor finds on board, even at sea.

What the specialist, the young sailor and the instructor experience.

  • Without any connection

Alongside or at sea: create, learn and translate without a network. Your procedures stay on board, under your sole control.

    Learn more
  • Hands-free

One hand for yourself, one hand for the ship: none is left to hold a tablet. The instruction is displayed on the equipment.

    Learn more
  • A few minutes

The specialist passes on a procedure in a few minutes, on the ship’s equipment: no writing, no filming, no mandatory editing.

    Learn more
  • Verified learning

A quiz checks that the task is understood; at school as on board, you track everyone’s progress.

Use cases

Alongside, at sea, at school.

Maintenance on board

The expert’s procedure available right beside the equipment, even when they are no longer on board.

Taking up a post

The sailor joining the ship finds their predecessor’s procedures, on the same equipment.

Rare intervention

Review an infrequent intervention before you need it, at sea.

Through-life support

The same procedures on board, ashore and at your industrial partners’ sites.

Crew spirit

The old hands pass on, the young learn: know-how that belongs to the crew, not to a single person.

Schools and qualifications

From initial qualifications to advanced certificates: the technical task shown on the real equipment, to review as often as needed.

The difference

What a tablet, a smartphone or an online platform impose on board.

Every tool has its strengths. Here is what these approaches impose by nature, and what we do differently.

  • Other approachesAn online platform requires a network. At sea, there isn’t one, or it isn’t made for that.
With SHIFT89The procedure is already on board. No connection, neither to create nor to learn.
  • Other approachesA tablet next to the equipment means one hand and one pair of eyes fewer. On board, you keep one hand for yourself.
With SHIFT89The instruction is displayed on the equipment, right where action is needed.Eyes on the task, both hands free.
  • Other approachesFilming with a smartphone means one hand fewer for the task. And often a shoot, then editing.
With SHIFT89The specialist passes on the procedure while performing it, hands-free.Their images stay on board, under your sole control.

What we equip

Shipboard language.

Instruction, training, through-life support: the same tool serves all three.

Operational readiness
The task rehearsed before it is needed, alongside or at sea.
Instruction and training
The technical task on the real equipment, to review as often as needed, at school as on board.
Shipboard specialists
Their technical know-how passed on to younger sailors, on the real equipment, before each posting.
Certificates and qualifications
The task rehearsed during preparation. The tutorial trains: it replaces neither the instructor nor the exam.
Crew spirit
Know-how that belongs to the crew, and stays on board.
Through-life support
The expert’s procedure right beside the equipment, at sea, with no infrastructure.

Our hardware advice

The hardware suited to your conditions of use, not the latest fashion.

Having worked in industry ourselves, we advise our customers as we would have done for ourselves: the device suited to your conditions of use, the length of your programs and your budget. Only operational solutions.

Isolated network

Devices that work without any connection, from first to last use.

Conditions of use

Confined spaces, ship motion, wear with personal equipment: we advise you on the hardware suited to your environment. Some conditions (outdoors, cold, explosive atmospheres) require a case-by-case study.

Lifespan

Hardware chosen to last and to be supported; your content does not depend on a single device.

Turnkey: we configure each device and fit it with the necessary accessories, so that it works in your environment and with your constraints. What we prepare

Works on: Microsoft HoloLens 2, Arvicom CART-S, Samsung Galaxy XR, VITURE Luma Ultra XR, XREAL Aura and VIVE Eagle, and soon Arvicom CART-3D. Your content does not depend on a device.

Measured results

What our deployments have measured.

Figures measured during our deployments, an award for through-life support, a method evaluated against Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

Defence, naval support

An award for through-life support

Our solution received an award from a defence naval support company.

Result: the award for best 3D through-life support (MCO) solution, in 2024.

Industrial research

A boiler manufacturing plant: the method evaluated against Guides

Our method stems from work carried out with Institut Mines-Télécom in a boiler manufacturing plant. It was compared with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

Result: a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022, the leading international conference on augmented reality.

Funding and procurement

Simple purchasing.

An off-the-shelf solution, on quotation. It is up to the buyer to qualify their contract, according to the rules that apply to them.

Licences on quotation

One licence per device, glasses or headset, with volume discounts, and one licence for the PC application. Your choice: annual licences, multi-year licences or licences for the lifetime of the hardware. A quotation based on your project.

One day to get started

A one-hour scoping session by video call, one day on site with up to 8 of your experts, then standard project management. Additional support days when your project requires them.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions.

Does it work without any network, at sea?

Yes. No connection is required, whether to create, to learn or to track learners. The artificial intelligence (transcription, translation, voice) also runs on your computers, offline.

Our procedures are in the manufacturer’s official documentation. What is a tutorial for?

The official documentation remains the reference. The tutorial complements it: it shows the task on the ship’s equipment, right where action is needed, and can be updated in a few minutes when the documentation changes.

It also makes training far more engaging and effective, particularly for younger generations. And it enables independent training, where there is no safety risk for learners.

Finally, it becomes your training standard: all learners are trained the same way, and this standard improves continuously, incorporating the best of your past, present and future trainers.

Glasses and headsets have cameras. What about protected areas?

Bringing a camera-equipped device into a protected area is subject to the approval of the site security officer: your rules apply. On our side, images stay on your equipment and none are sent to the software publisher. We do not know what our customers do with our solution, unless they tell us and share their content with us, on their own initiative.

HoloLens 2 is no longer manufactured, and its security updates continue until December 2027 for connected devices. What happens to the investment?

At SHIFT89, we support HoloLens 2 until at least the end of 2030, so you can use your investment for longer. #AugmentedTraining needs no connection to work: your HoloLens 2 headsets can therefore be disconnected from Wi-Fi, for maximum security.

Your content does not depend on a single device: several augmented-reality glasses and headsets are compatible. We advise you, completely independently, on the one that suits your operating conditions and your budget.

All content created with #AugmentedTraining on HoloLens 2 can be reused, without being redone, on the new glasses and headsets we support.

Doesn’t staff rotation cancel out the effort?

On the contrary: the tutorial stays on board when the technician leaves. Their successor finds it on the same equipment, and can improve it in turn: your training standard keeps the best of everyone who has held the post.

Is the software accredited?

Accreditation is a decision by the authority that operates the system, for a given system: we do not claim it. Under a non-disclosure agreement, we provide the technical documentation useful for your process.

The crew changes, the know-how stays.
