The challenge: interactive demo (2 min)

Aerospace

Production is ramping up, your experts are leaving: their skills stay, for every new recruit.

Production or Part-145 maintenance: your know-how never leaves the site, with no connection and no data held by the software publisher. Your experts pass on their skills in a few minutes; your new technicians and fitter-assemblers learn them hands-free, in augmented reality, on the part, the sub-assembly or the aircraft.

An experienced technician guides a young technician on an engine, in a maintenance hangar.
  • 100% offlineAuthoring, artificial intelligence and learner tracking without any connection: nothing held by the software publisher, nothing in the cloud, nothing leaving the site.
  • Hands-free, on the real equipmentThe device is worn, never set down: both hands stay on the tool, and no tablet is left lying around in the area.
  • A few minutesOne minute per instruction: your experts pass on their skills without leaving the workshop, and before they leave.

Your challenges

Ramping up production, with teams to train and experts who are leaving.

Order books full for years: the industry has to train fast, without compromising on safety.

The production ramp-up

Recruitment is increasing: every newcomer has to become autonomous quickly, on demanding tasks.

Training a lot of people, fast

Shortage occupations

Fitter-assemblers, welders, boilermakers and sheet-metal workers: trades where recruiting is difficult.

SMEs to hand over

In many of the industry’s SMEs, the owners are approaching retirement. With them, know-how can leave too.

Your experts are leaving

Human factors

Part-145 requires competence in human factors1; the UK authority’s CAP 716 guidance details its twelve pitfalls, the “Dirty Dozen”2.

Foreign objects (FOD)

A swarf chip, a screw or a forgotten tool becomes a foreign object. Every item set down in the area is one more risk.

Sensitive sites

Part of the industry’s activity is defence-related: restricted-access areas, protection of scientific and technical know-how. A cloud complicates everything there.

What SHIFT89 changes

Train every recruit fast, with no item set down in the area and no data leaving the site.

  • 100% offline

Authoring, AI and tracking without any connection: your know-how stays in your workshop or hangar, nothing held by the software publisher, nothing in the cloud. An asset for your restricted-access areas.

  • Hands-free

The device is worn, never set down: the instruction is displayed on the part, both hands stay on the tool, and no tablet is left lying around in the area.

  • A few minutes

Your experts pass on their skills in a few minutes, on the real part: one minute per instruction, with no writing and no contractor.

  • Who has been trained in what

In the PC application, a quiz checks what has been learnt and you track who has been trained on which task, and where people get stuck.

Use cases

From assembly to maintenance.

Production ramp-up

Your new fitter-assemblers follow the procedure of your best experts, in augmented reality, on the real part, at their own pace.

Part-145 maintenance

Before a rare task, the technician reviews the expert’s procedure on the equipment; the task card and the maintenance manual remain the reference.

Special processes

The critical points of a special process shown identically to every operator. The tutorial trains; it does not qualify.

Shift handover

From one shift to the next, the procedure remains available: the next shift finds it on the equipment, just as the expert showed it.

FOD-free areas

No tablet set down in the area: the device is worn, and is inventoried like your tooling.

Before an expert leaves

The knack of an expert who is retiring, passed on in a few minutes on the equipment, for those who stay.

A fair comparison

What tablets, the cloud and video impose in the area.

They are excellent tools. Next to an aircraft or a sub-assembly, however, they impose a few constraints, by their very nature.

  • Other approachesA tablet set down under the wing. One more loose item in the area, and one hand fewer for the task.
With SHIFT89No tablet left lying around in the area. The device is worn; the instruction is displayed on the part.
  • Other approachesAn online platform for your procedures.Your technical data held by a software publisher, and a connection to open all the way into the workshop.
With SHIFT89Nothing leaves the site.No connection, no data held by us, artificial intelligence included.
  • Other approachesA video shot by a contractor.Filming, editing, and one more person to bring onto the site.
With SHIFT89Your expert passes it on in person. In a few minutes, on the real part.
  • Other approachesYet another e-learning module.Useful for the principles, far from the part for the task itself.
With SHIFT89The task guided where it is done. And a quiz to check that it is understood.

What we equip

Workshop and hangar vocabulary.

The tutorial supports the task: it replaces neither the task card, nor the maintenance manual, nor human factors training, nor the Part-66 licence.

Part-145 and Part-66
Your technicians and your B1 or B2 licence holders review the procedure before a rare task, on the equipment.
Task card and AMM
The task card and the maintenance manual remain the reference; the tutorial shows, on the equipment, the task they describe.
Human factors
The expected task shown where it is done, with no ambiguity. Support for the task, not human factors training.
Shift handover
The procedure remains available from one shift to the next.
FOD
No item set down: the device is worn, and is inventoried like a tool.
EN 9100 and special processes
The critical points shown identically to every operator, and a record of who has been trained in what.
Production ramp-up
Train more people, faster, without tying up your best experts for every new arrival.

Our hardware advice

The right hardware for your workshop, not the latest fashion.

As former industry professionals, we advise you as we would have advised ourselves: the device suited to your workshop, your protective equipment and your budget. Only solutions proven in real conditions.

FOD-free areas

A device that is worn, never set down, and inventoried like your tooling.

Restricted-access areas

The use of a device with cameras is a matter for your security officer. Everything runs offline: approval is easier to obtain, and we help you prepare it.

Long programs

Your content does not depend on one device: several glasses and headsets are compatible, and we recommend hardware that will be supported over the long term.

Your budget

Just the hardware needed: neither the latest fad nor a cheaper but unreliable solution.

Turnkey: we configure each device and fit it with the necessary accessories, so that it works in your environment and with your constraints. What we prepare

Works on: Microsoft HoloLens 2, Arvicom CART-S, Samsung Galaxy XR, VITURE Luma Ultra XR, XREAL Aura and VIVE Eagle, and soon Arvicom CART-3D. Your content does not depend on a device.

Measured results

What our deployments have measured.

Figures measured during our deployments. Our method has been evaluated against Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides, in a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022.

Industrial research

A boiler manufacturing plant: the method evaluated against Guides

Our method stems from work carried out with Institut Mines-Télécom in a boiler manufacturing plant. It was compared with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

Result: a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022, the leading international conference on augmented reality.

Deployment

8 trainers operational after one day

In our deployments, one day of training is enough: trainers create their first tutorial that same afternoon, then work on their own from the next day.

Result: 8 trainers operational at D+1.

Funding and procurement

Simple purchasing.

An off-the-shelf solution, on quotation. It is up to the buyer to qualify their purchase, according to the rules that apply to them.

Licences on quotation

One licence per device, glasses or headset, with volume discounts, and one licence for the PC application. Your choice: annual licences, multi-year licences or licences for the lifetime of the hardware. A quotation based on your project.

Do you have HoloLens 2 headsets?

Your existing headsets remain in use, including after Dynamics 365 Guides.

After Guides

One day to get started

A one-hour scoping session by video call, one day on site with up to 8 of your experts, then standard project management. Additional support days when your project requires them.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions.

Does the tutorial replace the task card or the maintenance manual?

No. The task card and the maintenance manual remain the reference. The tutorial shows, on the equipment, the task they describe.

Is it human factors training within the meaning of Part-145?

No. It is support for the task, on the real equipment. It complements your human factors training; it does not replace it.

One more device in a FOD-free area: is that a risk?

The device is worn, never set down, and is inventoried like your tooling. That is precisely what it avoids: a tablet set down in the area.

Our workshops are in a restricted-access area. Is it possible?

The use of a device with cameras there is a matter for your security officer. Everything runs offline, with no data held by the software publisher, and under a non-disclosure agreement we provide the technical documentation needed for that decision.

HoloLens 2 is no longer manufactured and our programs last for years: what happens to the investment?

Your content does not depend on one device: it also works on other compatible glasses and headsets. HoloLens 2 security updates continue until December 2027 for connected devices, we support it until at least the end of 2030, and we advise you completely independently.

Our experts are retiring. Do we have time?

Yes: one minute per instruction, a few minutes for a tutorial, on the equipment, while doing the task. No writing, no filming, no mandatory editing.
