The challenge: interactive demo (2 min)

Energy and nuclear

Rare tasks, new contractors: everyone practises before intervening.

Maintenance outage, ten-yearly outage, lockout: your experts pass on their skills in a few minutes; your teams and contractors prepare hands-free, on the equipment or on a mock-up, before intervening. No connection, artificial intelligence included: your know-how never leaves the site.

An operator in an orange work jacket, with a white hard hat and augmented-reality glasses, stands in front of the consoles and screens of a control room.
  • 100% offlineNo outbound data flow, artificial intelligence included: nothing held by the software publisher, nothing in the cloud. An approach designed for critical infrastructure.
  • Hands-free, on the real equipmentThe instruction is displayed on the equipment or the mock-up: both hands stay free for the task, eyes on the installation.
  • A few minutesOne minute per instruction: your experts’ skills passed on during the current outage, for the team on the next one.

Your challenges

Rare tasks, high standards, teams to renew.

The nuclear industry has to recruit and train in large numbers, especially technicians.

Work preparation

In maintenance, significant events stem from shortcomings in preparation or execution: work preparation still needs to improve.

Errors and safety

Contractors recruited fast

A large share of the industry’s jobs are with subcontractors. Some contractors struggle to take on board some of the requirements specific to nuclear.

Tasks that come round every ten years

Some operations only come round once every ten years. From one outage to the next, the experts change.

Hard-to-fill electrical trades

Electrical and electronic maintenance workers, power line workers: trades where recruiting is difficult.

Critical infrastructure

Energy is critical infrastructure: your procedures have no business being on a software publisher’s servers.

Secrets to protect

The right task, in the right order

Lockout, self-checking, time-out: the reliability of an intervention depends on precise actions, prepared before entering the installation.

What SHIFT89 changes

Every worker prepared before entering the installation.

  • 100% offline

Authoring, artificial intelligence and learner tracking without any connection: no outbound data flow, nothing held by the software publisher. Your procedures stay within your perimeter.

  • Hands-free

On the equipment or the mock-up, the instruction is displayed where action is needed: both hands stay free for the task.

  • A few minutes

Your experts pass on their skills in a few minutes, during the current outage, for the people on the next one.

  • In each worker’s language

In the PC application, each instruction is translated and read aloud in the worker’s language, by an AI that runs at your site; a quiz checks what has been learnt before the intervention.

Use cases

From nuclear to power grids.

Maintenance outage preparation

Preparation that can be replayed, on identical equipment or on a mock-up, outside the controlled area: every worker reviews the task before entering the installation.

Pre-job briefing and time-out

Practical support for the pre-job briefing: the expected task, shown on the equipment, and the self-checking points.

Contractors and workers

The same task, the same order, the same standard for every worker, recruited fast and sometimes far from their head office, in their own language.

Ten-yearly outage

What your experts only do once every ten years, passed on during the current outage for the team on the next one.

Lockout

Isolation, locking off, identification, verification of absence of voltage, earthing and short-circuiting: practise in the right order, before intervening.

Take the challenge (2 min)

Electricity and gas networks

Operational base, workshop, training room: your senior technicians pass on their skills; electrical and gas technicians practise on the real equipment before intervening.

Hydropower

The hydropower technician’s skill, ready for whoever is alone on call, deep inside the plant, with no network.

Renewables

Preventive and corrective maintenance: preparation takes place in the workshop or training centre, before heading out to the farm.

A fair comparison

What the cloud, procedures read in a meeting room and mentoring impose.

They are useful practices. For preparing a rare and demanding intervention, however, they have a few limits, by their very nature.

  • Other approachesAn online platform for critical infrastructure. An outbound connection, procedures outside your perimeter.
With SHIFT89No outbound data flow.Artificial intelligence included: nothing held by the software publisher, nothing in the cloud.
  • Other approachesA procedure read in the preparation room.On the day of the intervention, the equipment is seen for the first time.
With SHIFT89Preparation takes place on the equipment.Or on a mock-up, outside the controlled area, as many times as needed.
  • Other approachesA mentor for every new worker.Experts tied up at the very moment the outage needs them.
With SHIFT89The expert’s skill, available to everyone. The same task, the same order, the same standard.

What we equip

The vocabulary of safety and intervention.

The tutorial supports preparation and the task: your operating documents, your mandatory training and the authorization remain the reference.

Maintenance outage
Workers prepared on the real equipment or on a mock-up, before the outage.
Mock-up preparation
A task that can be replayed as many times as needed, outside the controlled area.
Pre-job briefing (PJB)
The expected task, shown on the equipment during the briefing.
Self-checking and time-out
Verification points shown where they matter.
Human performance tools
Practical support to anchor them in the task.
Oversight of subcontracted activities
The same standard for every contractor, and a record of who has been trained in what.
Electrical authorization
The tutorial prepares for and rehearses the lockout; it does not replace the authorization, which is issued by the employer.
Lockout officer and work supervisor
Each person reviews their part of the procedure, on the equipment, before the intervention.
Safety culture
The same standard, shown the same way to everyone.

Our hardware advice

The right hardware for your workshop, not the latest fashion.

As former industry professionals, we advise you as we would have advised ourselves: the device suited to your workshop, your protective equipment and your budget. Only solutions proven in real conditions.

Entering the installation

Radiological cleanliness, equipment entering and leaving, on-board cameras: the decision lies with the operator and its security officer. We promise nothing your rules do not allow: our first focus is preparation outside the controlled area.

Long programs

Your content does not depend on one device: several glasses and headsets are compatible, and we recommend hardware that will be supported over the long term.

Outdoors and cold

Outdoor substations, aerial platforms, work in extreme cold: each environment requires a case-by-case study. We tell you beforehand, not afterwards.

Your budget

Just the hardware you need, proven in real conditions: neither the latest fad nor a cheaper but unreliable solution.

Turnkey: we configure each device and fit it with the necessary accessories, so that it works in your environment and with your constraints. What we prepare

Works on: Microsoft HoloLens 2, Arvicom CART-S, Samsung Galaxy XR, VITURE Luma Ultra XR, XREAL Aura and VIVE Eagle, and soon Arvicom CART-3D. Your content does not depend on a device.

Measured results

What our deployments have measured.

Figures measured during our deployments. Our method has been evaluated against Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

  • ÷ 5Trainers and mentors tied up5 times fewer, measured in our deployments
  • × 2Train twice as fast, autonomouslyMeasured in our deployments, at a tier-one automotive supplier

Industrial research

A boiler manufacturing plant: the method evaluated against Guides

Our method stems from work carried out with Institut Mines-Télécom in a boiler manufacturing plant. It was compared with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

Result: a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022, the leading international conference on augmented reality.

Deployment

8 trainers operational after one day

In our deployments, one day of training is enough: trainers create their first tutorial that same afternoon, then work on their own from the next day.

Result: 8 trainers operational at D+1.

Funding and procurement

Simple purchasing.

An off-the-shelf solution, on quotation. It is up to the buyer to qualify their purchase, according to the rules that apply to them.

Licences on quotation

One licence per device, glasses or headset, with volume discounts, and one licence for the PC application. Your choice: annual licences, multi-year licences or licences for the lifetime of the hardware. A quotation based on your project.

One day to get started

A one-hour scoping session by video call, one day on site with up to 8 of your experts, then standard project management. Additional support days when your project requires them.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions.

Can AR glasses and headsets be brought onto the site?

That is a decision for the operator and its security officer: radiological cleanliness, control of equipment entering and leaving, and on-board cameras are governed by the site’s rules. That is why SHIFT89 focuses first on preparation outside the controlled area, on identical equipment or on a mock-up.

What data leaves the site?

None. Authoring, artificial intelligence and learner tracking work offline; SHIFT89 hosts nothing and the software requires no online account.

Does the tutorial replace our operating documents or our mandatory training?

No. Your operating documents, your mandatory training and the authorization remain the reference. The tutorial prepares for and rehearses the task.

We are a nuclear contractor: is it for us?

Yes. Your teams, recruited fast and sometimes far from your head office, take on board a site’s requirements before entering it, each in their own language. Your know-how stays with you.

Our programs last for years and HoloLens 2 is no longer manufactured: what happens to the investment?

Your content does not depend on one device: it also works on other compatible glasses and headsets. HoloLens 2 security updates continue until December 2027 for connected devices, and we support it until at least the end of 2030.

What about networks, substations and outdoor work?

We focus on preparation and practice: operational base, workshop, training room, training equipment. Work outdoors requires a case-by-case study.
