The challenge: interactive demo (2 min)

Water, wastewater, waste

Your experts are leaving and your installations are critical: the know-how stays, offline.

Before your experts leave, capture their hands-on skills: one minute per instruction, on the installation itself. Each new operations technician then progresses independently, in their own language. Your infrastructure is critical, and so are your procedures: nothing leaves your site.

A technician wearing augmented-reality glasses services an industrial pump in the plant room of a water treatment works.
  • 100% offlineNo connection to your network or to the cloud: creating, learning and translating work offline.
  • No data held by the software publisherNothing is hosted by SHIFT89 and the software requires no online account.
  • Hands-freeThe instruction is displayed on the equipment: both hands stay on the pump, the valve or the tool.

Your challenges

Ageing teams, critical installations.

Departures to anticipate

In water companies, many employees will retire in the coming years.

Your experts are leaving

Hard-to-fill jobs

Operations or wastewater technician, maintenance technician, network technician: jobs that are hard to recruit for.

Heavy mandatory training

First aid, electrical authorizations, work at height, vehicle operation, confined spaces: mandatory training weighs heavily.

High risks

In waste and wastewater, workplace accidents are markedly more frequent than the average across sectors.

Critical infrastructure

In the European Union, drinking water and wastewater fall under the NIS 2 Directive: a training tool must not open any data flow.

Secrets to protect

Seasonal workers and new staff

In wastewater and waste treatment, part of the recruitment of operatives is seasonal.

What SHIFT89 changes

Your experts’ know-how kept before they leave, without opening any data flow.

What the experienced operator, the newcomer and the operations manager experience.

  • 100% offline

No connection to your network or to the cloud: your operating procedures stay on your site, nothing held by the software publisher.

Use cases

From treatment plants to sorting centres.

Pumping station

Operating and maintenance tasks shown on the installation, for the on-call technician as well as the newcomer.

Treatment line

Chlorination, ozonation, sludge storage: interventions prepared in advance, on the real equipment or in a training room, before going in.

Confined space: prepare before entering

The intervention instructions reviewed before entering the confined space, not inside it.

Sorting centre

Plant operators, sorting centre staff: settings, cleaning and maintenance shown on the machine, lockout included.

Lockout and authorizations

The tutorial prepares and rehearses lockout; it does not replace electrical authorization.

Onboarding new staff

Seasonal workers, temporary workers, new staff: guided on the equipment, in their own language, without tying up a mentor for every arrival.

The difference

What a tablet, a video or an online platform impose on an installation.

Every tool has its strengths. Here is what these approaches impose by nature, and what we do differently.

  • Other approachesA tablet in the station means eyes leaving the equipment. You read, turn around, look for where to act.
With SHIFT89The instruction is displayed on the equipment, right where action is needed.Eyes on the task, both hands on the tool.
  • Other approachesA video shows the task somewhere else. You have to pause, go back, find the right moment.
With SHIFT89Augmented reality places it on the installation. The learner moves at their own pace, guided step by step.
  • Other approachesAn online platform requires a connection at every installation. And critical infrastructure procedures held by a software publisher.
With SHIFT89No connection, neither to create nor to learn.Your procedures stay on your site, nothing held by us.

Our hardware advice

The right hardware for your workshop, not the latest fashion.

As former industry professionals, we advise you as we would have advised ourselves: the device suited to your workshop, your protective equipment and your budget. Only solutions proven in real conditions.

The operating range

Plants, stations and sorting centres are the natural settings. Outdoor work, cold, confined spaces and explosive atmospheres require a case-by-case assessment: we tell you what is possible before, not after.

With your protective equipment

Helmet, gloves, workwear: we check with you, workstation by workstation, that the device can be worn with your protective equipment.

Your budget

Just the hardware you need for your workstations and teams: neither the latest fad nor a cheaper but unreliable solution.

Turnkey: we configure each device and fit it with the necessary accessories, so that it works in your environment and with your constraints. What we prepare

Works on: Microsoft HoloLens 2, Arvicom CART-S, Samsung Galaxy XR, VITURE Luma Ultra XR, XREAL Aura and VIVE Eagle, and soon Arvicom CART-3D. Your content does not depend on a device.

Measured results

What our deployments have measured.

Figures measured during our deployments, a method validated by 5 industrial PhD theses and evaluated against Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides in a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022.

  • 1 minTo create an instructionBy the expert, on the real equipment, with no writing or editing (measured in our deployments)
  • × 2Train twice as fast, autonomouslyMeasured in our deployments, at a tier-one automotive supplier

Automotive industry

A tier-one automotive supplier trains twice as fast

Autonomous operator training, guided in augmented reality on the real equipment.

Result: training speed doubled.

Industrial research

A boiler manufacturing plant: the method evaluated against Guides

Our method stems from work carried out with Institut Mines-Télécom in a boiler manufacturing plant. It was compared with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides.

Result: a study published at IEEE ISMAR 2022, the leading international conference on augmented reality.

Funding and procurement

Simple purchasing.

An off-the-shelf solution, on quotation. It is up to the buyer to qualify their purchase, according to the rules that apply to them.

Licences on quotation

One licence per device, glasses or headset, with volume discounts, and one licence for the PC application. Your choice: annual licences, multi-year licences or licences for the lifetime of the hardware. A quotation based on your project.

One day to get started

A one-hour scoping session by video call, one day on site with up to 8 of your experts, then standard project management. Additional support days when your project requires them.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions.

Our installations are critical. Do we need to open network access?

No. No connection is required, whether to create, to learn or to track learners. The artificial intelligence also runs on your computer.

Can the glasses be used in a confined space?

The tutorial is used to prepare the intervention, before going in. Using a device inside the confined space itself falls under your risk assessment and requires a case-by-case assessment.

What about collection rounds?

Outdoor work requires a case-by-case assessment. The first uses are in plants, stations, sorting centres and the workshop.

We are a public buyer. How do we purchase?

Licences on quotation, one per device and one for the PC application: annual, multi-year or for the lifetime of the hardware, as you choose.

Our experienced staff have no time. How much time does it take?

One minute per instruction, a few minutes for a tutorial, on the real equipment, while doing the task. No writing, no filming, no mandatory editing, no contractor.

HoloLens 2 is no longer manufactured, and its security updates continue until December 2027 for connected devices. What happens to the investment?

At SHIFT89, we support HoloLens 2 until at least the end of 2030, so you can use your investment for longer. #AugmentedTraining needs no connection to work: your HoloLens 2 headsets can therefore be disconnected from Wi-Fi, for maximum security.

Your content does not depend on one device: several augmented-reality glasses and headsets are compatible. We advise you, completely independently, on the one that suits your working conditions and your budget.

All content created with #AugmentedTraining on HoloLens 2 can be reused, without being redone, on the new glasses and headsets we support.
